2 Timothy 2:8-10 : Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.

I should never forget that Jesus Christ died a horrible death, was sealed in a tomb, and most importantly on the third day He rose from the grave!! This is the Good News, which is ‘euangelion’ in the greek. And at the time of Christ euangelion was a declaration from the emperor expressing the hope for peace and wellbeing, kind of like a press release from a world leader saying their government is keen on creating and promoting peace. But as it says at the very beginning of Mark, ‘This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.’ My Good News is from Jesus Christ not a government leader! My hope is in the risen Christ who through God’s gracious act has given me new life.. praise the Lord!

Now the challenge is to live a risen life!! It is easy for me to live a kind of ‘death on the cross’ life, to be preoccupied with my sin, or even to live a ‘sealed in a tomb’ life where I feel captive and restrained by my weaknesses. But the Gospel is clear, that in accepting Jesus Christ I am to live the risen life! As Colossians 3:1-3 reads,

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

Living a risen life is setting my sights on the realities of heaven, thinking about the things of heaven. And how can I do this?

Through the Word of God which cannot be chained, and through being prepared to suffer, to struggle with the challenges that will come my way. We all suffer, the key is not letting that suffering and struggle take our focus away from God.

The phrase, the ‘word of God’ is very interesting! In greek, Word is logos, which can mean ‘language’, so the Bible is the language of God! In seeking to be focused on heaven I need to read the Bible, to learn God’s language. And learning a new language takes lots of disciplined practice and engagement. In the same way I need to work hard at reading and understanding the Bible.

So in living a risen life in Christ, in seeking to be focused on the realities of heaven, I have to be ready to struggle as the enemy bashes me around, and be prepared to learn the language of God through reading His Word! Wow!

God bless ya,

Rev Mark Brown

    Awesome! This is exactly what I was trying to say in past posts. Thank you Mark, for putting it all into a nutshell for us. 
    Timothy is the first of Paul’s epistles. Paul tells Timothy, a young pastor, to guard against false doctrine. Staying close to God through the Word, such as in these teachings, helps us guard ourselves against the ever-coming attacks of our enemy, Satin. Satin will do his best to distract us from our closeness with God. But, we need not fear for the Lord our God almightily is right here with us, ever guiding us in the right direction. When I become confused or in suffering through my struggle to become closer to God, He comes to the risqué giving me peace and a clear understanding of who He is. My focus on God becomes stronger and stronger. You see, what Satin does not know is that every time he attacks us God steps in, giving us strength to keep our focus on Him. So, Satin actually helps us become closer to God in a way. Turning negative things into positive is a great way to deal with confusion in my life.
    May your journey into God’s world be as satisfying as mine is.

  3. Oh how I love to have the meaning of the word.Greek,Hebrew and the diferent meanings of words can make lots of diference as to our understanding,and the Bible says with all you are getting,,get understanding.I sometimes feel that a lot has been lost with the translations of Gods word.Thank you Mark

    Thank you. I often get preoccupied with all the ways I fail God. I really needed the reminder that I walk in newness of life!!

  5. Thanks for sharing God’s blessed word. I am very pleased to be a part of ” Journey Deeper Into God’s Word.” Every morning is a new day in the Lord. I have learned to lean on Him more often, therefore the stuggles or the challanges of everyday are just a drop in a bucket. I am a 63 yr.old, wife, mother of 3 and grandmother of 5 and great-granny of 1.So I try to share everything I read about the goodness of God. None are serving the Lord, altho my husband goes to church with me more often then not, now days, he still not into reading, praying are worshipping. BUT HE WILL, bless God.. The rest are just living, doing their own thing. But bless God, and His merciful grace upon my own life today. For I have always claimed God’s promises to me, that my household shall be saved. What a journey I have traveled with my heaveny Father. It’s not been an easy road to travel by no means, but He has always been there, helping me pave the way through the wildernss and heavy forest, where life seems hopeless, He has given me hope in Him. Watching my family closely, as they do me, has been interesting to say the least. Because when I make a mistake, I try to quickly ask forgivness. One, daughter (she’s 39), in particular who has live a pretty harsh lifestly, started making some drastic changes and better choices, several months ago. Everyone watching her and waiting for the big fall, again. { This will not happen, by the grace of God she will survive and recieve Jesus Christ as her Savior, Amen} God is in charge. I must admit, this mommy has wanted to help her sooo many times and take her back. But I’ve been standing my ground, and am wittnessed God move in His loving ways. Molding her into the beautiful woman, He intended her to be, for His glory is upon. What a true blessing. An awsome experience in wait patiently upon the Lord our God. Amen. Thank You Father God, and His blessed Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.. Blessings to you, Brother Mark. Keep up the GOOD WORK IN SERVING THE LORD..

    Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Cor. 5:17 It’s important to not only know the Word but to speak the Word. Speak out loud who God says you are: you are more than a conquerer, you are the head and not the tail, you are blessed going out and blessed coming in, your are a child of God, you walk by faith and not by sight, you are redeemed from the hand of the enemy, you are forgiven….and so on and so forth…its good to know whose you are and who you are so you can walk in the newness of life.

  8. I thank you for your time putting Gods word on FB and email. Your family must sacrifice alot for that time. But it is appreciated. And needed. Your word has added joy to my life. Your like a friend we’ve never met. Dont stop.

    Isaiah 55:8, our ways are not His way and His thougts are not our thoughts. Great post, it’s the wisdom of Yahweh that keeps us from other than, if we are new creatures in Christ and old things are pass away then that’s how we should live and talk and think, on those things on high, the things of God amd not of the world. The word of God is to be studied not read and we are to apply what we learn to our lives and not take it out of context to fit the worlds standard. Walking in obedience to His commandments and His will for our lives, and standing up for righteous living and not accepting how the world is living. I don’t watch or buy bootlegs because it’s a form of stealing, strip clubs, kissing someone other than your hubby or wife, porn and lusting after another other than your spouce is all adultery in the eye’s of God. His ways and thoughts are much higher than ours. Amen to this post and I thank the spirit of the Lord for using you the way He does. Gb.

    Darlene that is such a beautiful testimony on being steadfast, unmoveable, patient and faithful to God and trusting in His promises to you. The devil has been defeated.

    • Thank you Isaac. God bless you. We truly have nothing to fear from the enemy. If we continue to invite our Lord God to join us on the battlefields that we face everyday, we shall alway be victorius. He will tells us to be of good courage, believe and trust in Him. So I have learned to give thanks, pray and worship in all things, giving God all the glory and honor. He is so worthy of all praise. I love our Savior. His mighty indeed. Faithful and trustworthy in all His ways. Amen

    Hmmm…the Bible is the language of God…Wow, I never thought of it like that before! I appreciate your thoughts about learning a new language…it takes ‘lots of disciplined practice and engagement.’ I love that God has used you to get me on the right track in reading His Word every day…thank you! 🙂

    For me the central theme of the passage is paul telling Timothy to always remember Jesus Christ, a decendant of King David was raised from the dead. Paul says this is at the heart of his message of good news (liked the exegesis of Good news in its context by the way, very helpful), it was why he was suffering and how he was able to suffer and at the heart of everything he wanted to do in his life, to bring glory to this Jesus Christ.

    How do we remember in every thing we do this Jesus… for the hebrews it has been said to remember was to beleive, to be able to live forwrds in the face of all things a life that reflected who it was who was thier God.

    But how does one always remember. In every situation remember Jesus? I recently watched the Jesus Creed and found it interesting how Scot Mcnight picks up the idea of the shema and Mezuzah’s as a way of keeping jesus words and the great commandment in our thoughts. But it must go beond this… Always remember…must6 go beyond just reading scripture to an attitiude in all situations.

    Darlene, I too was in the place of your daughter and I truly believe with all my heart that God hears a mothers prayer. I love the Lord with all my life and I am trying to serve him at all times. He has shown me the way. Today I live for him and yes I am a new creation. I saw my mother on her knees many a times praying for her children to come to know and serve the Lord and yes he answer her prayers. I know my mom is with the Lord and someday when I leave this world I ‘m looking forward to stand with her worshiping and praising God for all eternity. Let’s all continue to pray for one another. Love and many blessings to all my family in Christ

    • Lydia, I want to thank you for sharing with me. God has been good to you, Amen.. Your Mom, was Mighty Woman of God, through many nights of tearful prayers. He seen, heard and answered her, on your behalf. Amen. Now You’re another Mighty Woman of God. How awsome is that ?! I praise God for you, your Mom.. And for all the other Mom’s and Dad’s, out there in this troubled world, who are going through life storms. Yet not being moved or swayed, when we come to a fork in the road, it should be a reminder to stick closer then ever to God of all Salvation.
      You just keep doing what you know is right, Lydia. { Remember Jesus loves you and God has a plan for your life… Jeremiah. 29:11}

    I have decided that when the enemy bashes me around, I am going to pray twice as much, and tell twice as many folks as I normally would about Jesus. I am going to bash back………in Gods name…….Todays reading tells us that God wants us to be involved with others and that we may have to suffer along with them…so I will add alot more prayer to my bashing back……

    it seems like as time goes by the enemy has stepped up his attacks against me trying to wear me down, but God is my strenght and He lifts me up higher each time.i have been hospitalize 3 times in the last 6 months, but each time instead of asking God why, i have thanked Him for my healing even when others were telling me how bad my situation was. i have days when i depend on God for every breath i take,and i use that breath to praise God and thank Him for His goodness and if satan is waiting for me to break down and curse God he’s got a very long wait because it just isn’t going to happen. God is so good He’s so good to me.

      That’s so great to hear Lynn. I join with you in declaring His goodness. And I pray renewed healing and strength for you and your family and friends. He is the same God of old that raised the dead, healed the sick, cast out demons and made the blind to see. There is nothing impossible with Him. May God continue to sustain you, provide for you and give you his peace and joy liberally. Continue keeping the faith woman of God!!!

    Question Time!

    At church this evening, the speaker started talking about something called the “Great Comission”, but never really said what that meant. You can’t exactly raise your hand to ask a question in the middle of a sermon. So does anyone know what the Great Comission is? If so, fill a sista’ in!

    Obviously the Bible has been divinely inspire by God. What do you think His purpose was for including all the geneaologies (sp?)?? I can understand listing the bloodline of Jesus, but why all those other people (thinking about our readings from Genesis and Joshua)? In the same respect, why is it important to know who settled in what land?

    I know our assignment for Isaiah will be coming up soon. Why does God want all those different groups (all the “-ites”) of people destroyed? Is it because they live in the land promised to the children of Israel? Isaiah is really hard to read, so maybe I am missing some kind of back-story.

    These are just some things that have been rolling over in my head. Love and Hugs!

    I get so hung up over myself–both good and bad. I care so much what people think, I’m not mission-minded enough, I’m selfish, etc. I want to be passionate about God–yet I don’t feel it. Mark, thank you for being so willing to share your life and your story with us. I pray now that He will remind you today just how precious you are and that you are running this race well.

    Living a risen life also requires the Holy Spirit, the Comforter that God left with us. Oftentimes we underestimate the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit, but He is the help that God left us to live overcoming lives. This week at our Keswick Convention, a lot of focus has been placed on Christians being transformed, as much of us do not DEMONSTRATE transformed lives, even though we profess the faith. And some of the evil evidences of living in the flesh, as outlined in Galatians 5, may exist in our lives, even if it is just not allowing God to be in full control of EVERY aspect of our lives – as this in itself is a kind of revelling (a self-revelling). To be live the risen, transformed life, let us purpose in our hearts to submit every minute, every desire, every decision every thought to God, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. That is my challenge!

  20. Simone permalink

    PS: If you do not hunger and thirst for God’s righteousness, be honest. Tell God you do not have that desire. But a good start is wanting to have that desire. Just be honest with God. He already knows, but you admitting it is the key to His intervention. Let us be honest together with Him, and watch God move for 2010. New beginnings, victorious living. We will trust You Lord!!!

  22. Dying a horrible death; being sealed in a tomb; and rising from the grave on the third day is “another gospel” or, at best, history if all the details can be verified.

    The “Good News of Jesus Christ”, on the other hand, is absolutely newsworthy every time and all the time because of the presence of uninterrupted visions of his self-revelation in his perfect and transfigurative death on the cross complete with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and point of change for man from one “born of the flesh” to another “born of the Spirit”, i.e., the new life! This is “the light which shines in the darkness –the light that darkness has never put out!” (John 1:5).

    This is can be confirmed from the following sources, viz.:

    1) The well-documented summary of the gospel (Matt. 26:64; 27: 50-56);

    2) The detailed development of the gospel (John 1: 51; 3: 14-17; 6: 62-64; 8: 21-32; 10: 17-18, 37-38; 14: 15-21; 16: 5-15, 23-33; 17; 19: 30-37);

    3) The extensive testimonies of the Apostles focused on the death of Jesus Christ and,

    4) Most importantly, personal experience by verification of the cause and effect of the death of Jesus.

    For our mutual edification, I stand to be corrected if other students of the gospel find any substantive error in my comment. GBY all!
