God is in Charge!! – James 1:6-8
James 1:6-8: But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Yesterday the Bible page I founded on Facebook experienced a massive co-ordinated attack with deeply offensive material posted on the wall, ranging from pornography, extreme blasphemy, personal attacks and threats of violence. At one stage the attackers, in response to someone disagreeing with their warped view, posted the persons home address on the wall, in an act of extreme intimidation. And then they began a personal attack on me. They started posting offensive material on my personal page, and began a smear campaign, claiming I was a convicted rapist.
Apparently a man by the name of Mark Brown in the US was convicted of rape back in 2008, and they were suggesting that I was the same Mark Brown. It was a flimsy ploy as none of the basic details lined up! A quick piece of investigation would reveal that I have never lived in the US, and I have never been a school principal. It was a clear attempt to undermine and discredit myself and plant seeds of uncertainty within the Bible page community.
My initial reaction was to start deleting and reporting to Facebook, and then I enlisted help with a number of others tasked to do the same. And as I realised the scale of the attack, I closed the wall down, stopping all posts.
I was quite disturbed by this experience, and it showed as one of my staff later in the day came up to me brandishing a gift to comfort me, saying that I seemed ‘flat’. In the James reading I read that I need faith to have wisdom: to be a doer of the Word, not just a reader. And faith is a firm conviction, an assurance in God and Christ. It is knowing that God is in charge, even when things are very stressful and disturbing. The opposite of faith is doubting, which James says is like being tossed around by the wind, like a wave in the sea. The greek behind doubting is to be in dispute, to be separate. So if faith is knowing that God is in charge, doubting is forgetting or ignoring this fact. Faith is recognising that I am connected to God, doubting is being disconnected, separate from God. As the attacks happened on the Bible page and my personal page, I realise two things:
I am connected with God, I have faith in God and everything is ok – God is in charge!
These people attacking my pages are not connected with God. They will not receive anything from the Lord; they are double-minded, and unstable in all their ways. But I want them to be connected, to have faith. And for that reason I invite your prayers for them, and if they are reading this, I invite there contact and questions about being connected to God via my page below.
Yes God is in charge!!
