Time to do some weeding – Matthew 13:24-30

November 30, 2009

Matthew 13:24-30:  Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ ” ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ” ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’ “

While reading this passage this morning I had the most amazing experience!  I realised that within my own life there were weeds amongst the wonderful things that make up my life.  And I realised that I need to remove my weeds.  So I sat down and wrote a list identifying these weeds and what I was going to do to remove them.  I listed the practices that I am not happy with, the things that can lead to sin, and I worked out how to remove those practices.  I sat there reading my freshly written list, praising God for this revelation and then: I was overcome with the Holy Spirit, a strong, glorious feeling of peace and joy!!

And then something else quite amazing happened.  I went to bed and woke up with cold symptoms, sore throat, tiredness etc.. and all of this instantly disappeared when I was filled with the Holy Spirit!  This is a first for me, in fact I have never heard of that happening to anyone else before, but I welcome it!

Praise God!

Do you have weeds you need to remove?

God bless,

Rev Mark Brown

Thank you for you post! I had a question: When you say filled with the Holy Spirit what do you mean? Are you talking about what happened to those in the book of Acts when they recieved the Holy Ghost by eveidence of speaking with tongues? If you don’t feel comfortable answering that question I understand.

I was filled with the Holy Spirit when I was a child and I can’t imagine what my life would be without His spirit inside me. I am striving to live a life with the Word of God as my guide and becoming more like Him every day. Thanks again!!

  3. Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever. in the old testament, and i won’t look it up right now, there is a verse where God tells the Israelites that there will come a time when they have stopped rebelling, that He will gather them again and heal their diseases and then the will know Him as, “The LORD that heals.” In the new testament, people were brought to Jesus having many different sicknesses and possession, etc. and He healed them everyone. and again, i won’t look up the reference right now. lol. i’m sure you’re concordance is much better than mine, anyway. at any rate, i have been healed many times in my life, from things as small as a paper cut to as large as paralysis from a herniated disc in my neck with the spinal cord wrapped around it. I am praising God with you, Mark, that He has allowed you this experience. It is an incredible faith builder! God continue to bless and keep you, in Jesus’ Name, amen. Oh, by the way, one doesn’t necessarily have to be filled with the Holy Ghost to be HEALED, but definitely must when being USED TO HEAL OTHERS. 🙂

I praise our Father for bringing healing to your body. You submitted to the Holy Spirit that is inside of you and that submission allowed His power to manifest itself in you. Christ is in us and all authority is given to him, so I would expect nothing less from Him!

  5. May the Lord continue to bless your ministry.

May you have many blessings and be a blessing to many.

  7. Thank you very much Rev. Mark for daily inspirations May our Savoiur count it as your righteousness being a blessing to others I look forward to it everyday and reflect on the same verse i just have read although have been on this passages many times but seems to be always fresh as if hearing it for the first time. All of us have weeds in our lives that needed to be burned so we can be pure and be able to get God’s wink, a hard process but If Jesus is in our hearts who can be against us? More blessings and I pray that God will touch you more in a very special way. God bless

When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins and come into our hearts, at that moment the Holy Spirit moves in and fills us. Jesus said, before He went back to heaven, that He would send the Holy Spirit to be with us & live in us, to guide & teach us, until He comes back again. So, the moment we are saved, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. At least that’s what I’ve been taught that the Bible says. God Bless you!!!

  9. This is so true indeed. For the past couple of days I have been feeling the same thing. I think its time for us as “the body of Christ” to take a step back, look at what is going on in our lives that are hindering our walk with the Lord and then assess what to do to go forward. It’s time for us to “get it together” so that we can help those out there that are still lost – if we are a “mess” how can we help others??

Have a truly blessed day – thanks for sharing..

WOW – that’s hitting the nail on the head! Thanks for sharing this, Jodi!! I’ve got a list of weeds to make! 🙂

Mark it would seem to me that the scriptural references is indicating to not remove the weeds until the harvest time. How then did you come about this revelation.

    • Rhonda permalink

I agree. But, I think Jodi has the right idea. To weed out anything in our lives that is keeping us from doing God’s work. My pastor talks about this, even to look at who we hang with, and if need be, “cut them from our herd”. But, don’t you also think that in this parable, Jesus is referencing the final judgment – when the saved will be harvested and go to their heavenly home, and the unsaved (weeds) will be separated out and sent to their eternity in hell? Just my thoughts…

  12. Brother, I too have some weed’n to do! Thanks for sharing your insight. I like Ps 119.105 “Thy word is a LAMP unto my feet & a LIGHT unto my path.” The Lamp shows me where the weeds are and the Light will show me how to clear them from my path!

For nearly sixty years, I have had the benefit of the Holy Spirit guiding my life. I could not afford college, The Spirit told me to join the Army. I got some wonder training in the Army and the G. I. Bill which allowed me to go to school at night and get a college dgree. Without the urging of the Spirit, I would not had gotten these benefits as they soon expired after I went into the Army. The Spirit guided me to a company I did not know of and gave me a wonder career. One that I alone woud never have found. The Spirit gave me wisdom that was used to make my company and its employees lots of money. Though I never had a class in chemistry, I did things that benefitted my company, the industry and industreis that used our products. Things that chemistry PHDs could not do. With the spirit leading you can excel to highest level. You have to work very hard and learn constantly the things the Spirit put before you. No man can take what the Spirit gives you away. Even with the Spirits guidance, I still have the weeds growing among the good things because I did not turn my life fully over to the Spirit. The weeds will die when I do. All I am I owe to God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The Bible says God has a plan for your life. It comes through obeying the guidance of the Spirit.

I have asked for the baptism of the Holy Spirit twice and so has my daughter. The pastor and elder that prayed for us still doesn’t understand why ‘it didn’t take.’ My daughter and I have been wondering the same thing. We have searched our hearts and cried out to God with no answers. We would both really like to have the filling. Can you shed some light on the issue?

    • Lisa permalink

Carole, by my understanding of the Bible, and this is how I was taught at home and at my church, and what I believe myself, it is at the point of receiving the Lord Jesus as your Saviour when you receive the Holy Spirit.
From my vague understand of pentecostal churches, they baptise you to receive the Holy Spirit, and you know you have received Him when you can speak in tongues? Is this correct? If so it isn’t true. The Bible is VERY clear that everyone has different gifts and that they all work together.
      Romans 12 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+12&version=NKJV)
      1 Corinthians 12 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians+12&version=NKJV)
If you have received the Lord Jesus as your Saviour, then you already have the Holy Spirit within you. Take some quiet time just to read the Bible and pray and listen. Not everyone has huge amazing revelations from God. Remember the story of Elijah:
“Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”

That’s the voice we should be looking for. God speaks to us in the quietness of our hearts, and by being ready to listen and respond, His voice will be clearer. Please do not be discouraged if you can’t speak in tongues. The Bible says that when you speak in tongues it only edifies yourself, whereas other spiritual gifts edify others.
God bless you, I hope you find the perfect peace of God.

John the baptists disciples believed the same thing in Acts when they were met by Apostles after the Pentecost experience where 17 nationalities understood the tongues that Peter Spoke in at His infilling. I beleive this gift as Paul tryed to teach was to allow the Gospel to go to men and not to angels.

When hands were laid on these baptists in Acts they PROPHESIED the great and wonderouse things of God for those who were witnesses to hear and they understood what they heard also – else how could they testify that these were praising God.

Being SEALED with the Holy Spirit occurs at one accepting Christ – this is true – else you could not be a child of God – for as many as received Him and have the Holy Spirit are His. To be filled inside means to be EMPTY of YOUR own will and God ENTHRONED in His TEMPLE – You. So just allow God to empty You – ask Him to show your were YORU will is enthroned or the WILL of others and Ask Him to take those things away and He will and He will also fill You as you are emptied in those areas.

Hope this Helps and I will be Praying for you and others that want a true experience that comes only From the Heavenly Father.

Be sure not to worry about It – just expect by Faith that God will do this wonderfull thing in You and begin using/blessing you in His Kingdom on Earth.

A few years ago, I had gone to a prayer meeting with a very bad neck pain. We were worshiping and Praising our Lord. At the end of the meeting a girl ask if we could pray for her, for she had such a bad pain in her neck and back. She could hardly move her head in any direction. I felt the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon us who were praying. The girl felt relief from her pain and then I notice that I felt no pain no pain either. I tell you, God amazes me all the time. We serve an Awesome God. I also have to look into the weeding in my life and I know Jesus is helping me and you thru this. Pastor Mark, May God continue with the good works he began in you. He sure is doing a great job. I Praise his Holy Name.

My friend Leah came from Mississippi to Washington D.C. with her newborn son hoping for surgery to repair his heart. Now, a month later, doc’s say it’s inoperable, and Leah & little Pierce will be going soon to a hospital in Arkansas to await a donor heart. A great outpouring of prayer is already in progress, but more is always welcome. In picures, little PIerce looks like the perfect, robust, healthy baby except for the tubes running into his nose, & docs say he is just that—all but his broken heart. Please pray for healing for Pierce, continued strength & faith for Leah & her family, & God’s direction in the decions made re a heart transplant and peace with those decisions. I’m holding out for a miracle!!!!! God can heal this precious child of His!

  23. Weeding is a job better left to the Holy Spirit still pouring out from, no where else but, the pierced side of Jesus Christ on the cross! (John 16: 5-15; 17: 20-26; 19: 30-37)

After reading your words I feel in my heart that I must reply. I was once an Atheist. One night in 1986 I went to bed (an Atheist.) The next morning the instant that I awoke and before any thoughts were in my mind, I felt the warmth of the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ go totaly through my body. It was a feeling of Total Love & Compassion and a voice within my heart told me that there was a God and that Jesus Christ was calling me. For this to happen to an Atheist like myself (then) it was a totaly amazing experience. (Maybe a similar Spirit filling experience that Saul had on his way to Damascus?) I started going to my local church in 1986 and I have been going ever since. I praise our Lord Jesus Christ for his AMAZING GRACE. God Bless.

This is the first time I have written anything or replyed in this forum. I don’t know if it’s my place. But here goes Kay.

In 1st John 1:9 It says “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and will cleans us from all unrightiousness.

When Jesus’ apostles asked Him how many times should we forgive, seven times seven, He said no! seventy times seven.

Even though He said we are not to use our salvation as an ocasion to sin.
We are His as believers in Him. Nothinng He says can take us away from Him. We are sealed in Him. His seal is on us. We are sealed in Him.

He says. “Though we may stumble, we will never fall because His hand is there to catch us.”

He says, “Now that we have bathed, all we need to do now is wash our hands”

God bless you. Keep the faith.

“If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Yes, confess your sin a second time, and pray that God will help you resist temptation. I was once in a spot where my lifestyle was contradicting God, and now, in hindsight, I can see a lot of worry and heart ache would have been avoided if I’d resisted temptation. God says that He won’t ever let us be tempted with more than we can bear. So pray to God, read His word and equip yourself.

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

      God Bless!

Pastor Mark-This is exactly what AA is about: a spiritual awakening, turning our will and out lives over to the care of God, “cleaning house”, and working with others!! I am thrilled that you had this experience. It is a blessing from God for anyone that goes through it. If you can, find someone you trust and admit all to that person. The point here is that you may get more insight into your weeds. When I did it, I believe that God led the session and “spoke” thru that person. If anyone is interested, see chapter 5 of the AA “Big Book”. This is, I believe, a gift from God. In place of the word alcohol, substitute whatever word that might reflect one’s problem. It is truly a spiritual way to live. It brought me into my current relationship with God, thru our Lord Jesus Christ. Many of AA’s precepts can be traced to the Bible, especially the book of James. The founders and original groups spent much time in daily meditation and Bible Study.
Anyway, thank you for showing all of us the power of God.

Thanks for sharing, John. I am also a recovered alcoholic/addict. I was “out there” for over 20 years. But, once I surrendered it all to God, he not only took away the obsession for drugs and alcohol but restored my life times 100!! I have more than I wished for……….wish is exactly how our Great God works!! I have always said that the Big Book was written by God through the founders of AA. If you know the Bible, it isn’t hard to spot at all, is it? I love to hear people talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit. I was never taught that going up, nor the close, personal relationship that you can (and I do) have with our Father. Yes, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in you when you repent and accept Jesus in your life but there have been and still are times when I feel the Holy Spirit inside me. It is the most wonderful feeling in the world. If it feels this good now I can’t wait to get to Heaven!!! Praise God!

I understand about the weeds growing amongst the wheat. I recently experienced something similar where I was doing a positive work for the Lord and faced a lot of opposition. It was heartbreaking to say the least and my human side wanted to justify myself to the naysayers. But I heard the Holy Spirit say, keep you eye on the sparrow…do not lose focus on what God has placed in your heart to do until it is complete. So that is what I did, I choose not to explain myself or try and win people over to what the Lord called me to do. I just kept pressing forward. I am still in the mist of this project, but it is almost complete. But feel good for enduring and going forward with God’s work in spite of some of the opposition or negative said about me. They said it about our Messiah, who am I that I should be without ridicule.

Due to series of extremely difficult circumstances, incl. a divorce from a 32 yr. marriage, and most recently, the death of my beloved mother, I have been left exhausted ,fed up w/this world and all of its problems.I have been a Christian most of my life and the Lord has given me strength when I had none, or else I would not be here. I give Him all the glory and honor He is due.
I have an addiction and am also very, very concerned and distraught about my youngest daughter. I think she is back on some kind of illegal drug, after going thru a long process to get her life straightened out. This has just knocked me off my feet and I cannot deal w/it. I am so sick and tired of all of my problems and wondering why I cannot deal w/them anymore. I do believe we have our limits!

    Mr. Mark,

With all due respect, the bible is God’s inspired word and the Holy Spirit will always be consistent with God’s word. Beginning in verse 38 of that same book and chapter, we can see that Jesus interpretes the parable quite differently than you did. The tares are the children of Satan, not temptations in our life and at the judgement we (the children of God) and Satan’s children will be separated. The separation won’t be done by use but by God’s angels. Not to say that we shouldn’t remove the things in our life, that cause us to sin but that isn’t the context of this scripture. Therefore, if this is true and I believe we all can see that it is, it would be inconsistant for the Holy Spirit to tell you something different.

I am feeling a little taken over by life right now. Within the last month or month and a half I have been through some extremely big changes in my life and not sure the direction I am going. My Grandmother who with my Grandfather are my rock of Gibralter went home last year. Since then I have been taking care of and living with my Grandfather. My husband filed divorce on me February, 08 and then my Grandmother got sick and then went home in May, 08. I have been going through proceedings till this September when we finally went to court.

I then earlier this year fell and then found out I have Fibromyalgia this past month I have changed my job (which was a good thing, but also got divorced and then moved a 9 room house into a 5 room ranch with other people’s stuff still there. I am still going through the adjustments of the job and still going through stuff with the now ex-husband. I am feeling very lost right now and feeling a little cheated at not having a family life and some meaning to it. My life has had much negativity to it, but I am trying to filter that now and have more meaningful and more postive things. It is a lot of work taking care of my Grandfather, but I am truly blessed with his presence. I need to take all of this like a broken toy, and give it over to God. I need to surrender so much right now because I have not much left to give.

    Sincerely,

    Darlene

This was an inspiring passage to read. It makes me think how many weeds i have in my life and how much i try to get rid of them everyday, and im always trusting and praying to God that he will make evrything ok and that the Holy Spirit is always guiding me and those around me that i am praying for..Even though i wish there were times where there was no suffering i know its god making us stronger and helping us face the facts of life and things ee need to prepare for in the future, i pray to god everyday that he guides me my friends family especially the people very close to me that are going through hard time, i kno god provides. we may not always see it but believing, really is seeing, and that is what’s amazing about God..I pray that he helps point out those weeds i need to get rid of to have fresh start everyday in my life 🙂

  55. I think yes, I have weeds. I am human and I think there are times when we all have reared some weeds… But if we ask our Lord for forgivenes and help He is going to remove our weeds that troubles us….
